Hip-hop rhymes : Soul feel : Island styles

Thelma Thomas aka MC Trey is well known in the Australian music scene, with nominations for the ARIA, Urban Music, 3D and Jack Music Awards.

Over the years, she has established herself as a prominent hip hop artist / vocalist, offering unique styles of melodic & insightful rhymes & rhythms about life, love & her experiences.

Lyric writing began in primary school in Fiji, while listening to reggae, island music and what ever was on the radio. She was introduced to hip-hop through movies like ‘Krush Groove’ and music videos by ‘Rock Steady Crew,’ but wasn’t propelled to rap her own words over beats until the early 90’s. Her Fijian heritage and father’s gospel singing helped inspire & mould Trey’s musical abilities, manifesting through her melodic delivery of rhyme and song.

Thelma has entertained crowds around Australia, NZ, Fiji, USA, UK & Japan including, Vivid’s Carnival of the Bold, Onyx Platinum, Oceania Festival, Sydney Writers’ Festival, Sydney Festival, East London West Sydney Theatre Show, TRAPS Night Club, East London West Sydney, Spirit Festival, Platform 1 Hip Hop festival, Slum Village, Big Day Out National tours, Pyramid Rock Festival, Multicultural Festival, Pacific Unity Festival, Sydney Writers’ Festival, Pasifika Festival, The Basement, Homebake Festival, Newtown Festival, Vibes on a Summers Day tour, Waitangi Festival, St.Kilda Festival.

She has supported and performed onstage alongside Hip-Hop heavy-weights such as: LUPE FIASCO, COMMON, RZA, XZIBIT, JURASSIC5, THE FUGEES, NAUGHTY BY NATURE, RUN DMC, MICHAEL FRANTI, THE ROOTS, BLACKSTAR, BLACKALICIOUS, COMPANY FLOW, CHE-FU, KING KAPISI, The ALKOHOLIKS, SCRIBE AS WELL AS DJS ROC RAIDIA, CASH MONEY, SHADOW & Q-BERT.

Trey has recently released a single in ‘Daily’ which was launched in Ausralia and Fiji and working on new music for release later in the year. Her previous release was titled ‘Light’ highlighting the growing issue of domestic violence. Her music speaks of social issues, every day experiences and the possibilities that a new day brings. Previous releases include Duets CD (ICE/Grindin 2009), Foreign Heights CD (Grindin’/Central Station 2007), Tapastry Tunes CD (Tapastry Toons/Shock 2003), Creepin’ CD/vinyl single w/Fatt Dexx (TV1/Sony 2001), Daily Affirmations CD (Tapastry Tunes/Mother Tongues 2000), Universal Soldier 12″ (Tapastry Tunes/Mother Tongues 1999), Projectiles US tour tape (Tapastry Toons 1998), Projectiles demo CD & Tape w/DJBonez (Tapastry Toons 1996 & 1997).

She has also worked in Hip Hop Theatre with projects directed by Jonzi D (UK) at Carriageworks East London West Sydney, for Sydney Festival 2011 and The Bridge directed by Morganics and hosted music shows on Channel V and Red on the Foxtel Network. An exciting collaboration with Maya Jupiter and DJ Nick Toth as hip-hop trio, Foreign Heights, earned them an ARIA nomination in 2007. The album featured Mystro (UK), Eternia (Canada), with production by Pmoney (NZ), Mr. Zux and Kut Master Kurt (USA)

Off mic, MC Trey is a passionate Community and Cultural Development worker, based at the Australian Museum, coordinating and facilitating Pacific culture and music workshops for marginalized young people around Australia. She has also earned a Vodafone Australia Foundation, World of Difference award and recognition for Crime Prevention projects.
